- Quantum fluctuations are a source of true randomness. This underpins processes like radioactive decay and contributes to the probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics.
- How does TOU address this? True randomness wouldn't technically exist right? It would just be an indication of a visibility/processing/resolution issue?
- The vacuum fluctuations stabilize particles like protons and neutrons by exchanging virtual particles, which are crucial for the forces that hold atoms together.
Black Holes and Hawking Radiation
Hawking predicted that we would see radiation coming from black holes (Hawking radiation). This radiation would be the result of virtual particle pairs (the result of quantum fluctuations) being ripped apart before they had a chance to annihilate each other because one of the particles fell into the black hole and the other escaped. Turns out he was right - we were able to see it. And when this virtual particle is ripped from its complementary buddy, it pulls a certain amount of energy from the black hole - which is one thing that contributes to black holes evaporating. (didn't realize they did that)
